Meet Chris Ashton, The Project Manager at Galliford Try, overseeing the development of 1-4 Marble Arch.
Can you explain your role in one sentence?I am a Project Manager for Galliford Try. I oversee the day to day running of the Marble Arch project and I am responsible for the site’s health and safety.
How long have you been doing this job?I have been in my current role for 7 years, but I have been working for Galliford Try for the last 15.
Did you find yourself in this role by accident or by design?By design. I am a carpenter by training, but I was always too much of a perfectionist. I began my construction career as a Finishing Foreman, where I got to check the quality of other peoples work, which was perfect for me. Over the last 15 years I have worked my way up to become a Project Manager and I now report to our Site Lead - Barry Kingscote.
What’s the best part about your job / role?Problem solving. I see construction as one piece of flowing traffic and I get great satisfaction out of overcoming the inevitable traffic jams. I also find it really rewarding being able to help get the best out of my colleagues.
What’s the strangest thing that has ever happened to you in your job?Late last year the team and I assisted a tourist who had broken her nose when someone accidentally pushed passed her on Oxford Street. She had hit her face quite badly, so we took her into the site office and treated her injury whilst an ambulance arrived. The family were so grateful that they sent an email to our head office, thanking the Marble Arch Team.
What do you enjoy doing when you are not at work?I am a real family person. I have two sons who are both really into their sport, so you will often find me in the swimming pool or on a football pitch volunteering as an assistant referee (linesman) at the weekends.
What do you like about this area? I like the Arch itself and I often have my lunch in Hyde Park. The area also has a wonderful selection of local cafes and restaurants. The people in this area are always very friendly too.
Where’s your favourite place to go for lunch in the local area?It would have to be either The Grazing Goat or Prezzo, which is right next to our site.
Who is YOUR hero and what is it about them that inspires you?My nan. She was very elegant and always knew the right thing to do.
If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would it be?Disney World Florida for the kids. We recently visited the one in Paris and they loved it. I personally would really like to visit Australia.
