To celebrate International Women’s Day on 8 March 2025, Stanka Todorova, External Manager at Berkeley Group, joins us for a special Hidden Hero interview to share how she turned her passion for construction into a thriving career.

Can you explain your role in one sentence?I work as an External Manager for Berkeley Group, London’s leading construction main contractor, overseeing and planning building projects to ensure they are safe, functional, and meet all required standards.
Did you find yourself in this role by accident or design, and how long have you been doing it?My path into construction was entirely by design. From a young age, I was drawn to the industry, which led me to study at Construction High School before earning my degree in Civil Construction Engineering from the University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy in Bulgaria. I started my career as a designer, then moved on-site as a Quantity Surveyor and Site Manager, roles I found far more dynamic and challenging.
What’s the best part about your role?Being part of a team that builds homes from the ground up is incredibly fulfilling. It’s exciting to see a project take shape and know that we’re creating something that will serve communities for years to come.
What challenges have you faced as a woman working in your industry?Construction has traditionally been a male-dominated field, and even today, when men see a woman managing a site for the first time, there can be skepticism. I’ve had to work hard to prove that I can do the job just as well, if not better, than my male counterparts.
What has been your biggest lesson as a female leader in your industry?I’ve learned that respect is key. Everyone is unique, and as a leader, you must acknowledge and value different perspectives to bring out the best in a team.
What advice would you give to women considering a career in construction?Construction is a fast-paced and rewarding industry where you get to work with a variety of people. To succeed, you need strong communication skills, listening is just as important as speaking. Always try to understand different viewpoints, as this helps in meeting expectations and resolving challenges.
What do you like most about the local area?I love how close it is to central London and Hyde Park. Plus, the cycling routes mean I can bike to work, which is a great way to start the day!
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?I cherish spending time with my partner and two daughters, whether we’re cycling, walking in the park, or playing games. I also love Zumba and making thoughtful gifts for friends, like candles and night lamps.
If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would it be?There are so many magical places with rich history, mountains, valleys and lakes that I’d love to explore in my beautiful home country, Bulgaria.
Who is your female hero and why?As an Orthodox Christian, my faith is central to my life, and I don’t have idols beyond God. However, I deeply admire brave women who face challenges head-on and achieve their dreams with resilience and joy. I also hold great respect for the women in history who sacrificed so much, including their own lives and loved ones, for freedom.
