Afternoon Tea with a Japanese Twist at Prince Akatoki

On 7 February 2024, volunteers at the Prince Akatoki Hotel generously welcomed in community members from Penfold Community Hub for afternoon tea and bingo. Penfold Community Hub offers stimulating and accessible activities, as well as advice and information, to Westminster residents aged over 50.

Two guests sat at a table being served afternoon tea by a member of staff

After being escorted down to their own private room, Penfold members were introduced to some traditional Japanese teas, such as Hojicha and Matcha. The room itself was beautifully decorated with a mural depicting dawn rising over mountains in Japan, reflecting the name Akatoki, which comes from an ancient Japanese word for sunrise.

Afternoon tea at the Prince Akatoki Hotel came with a Japanese twist; sushi, chicken katsu sliders and matcha cake all went down a treat amongst the Penfold members. Some had never tried sushi before, so really appreciated being able to try something new.

Just as everyone thought they were full, the scones came out. Suddenly, members realised they had room for just a bit more. There were classic British scones and miso scones, a brilliant bright green, and just as tasty! The room erupted into the jam-or-cream first debate, but no consensus was reached.

Once everyone was well and truly stuffed, the bingo began. A Prince Akatoki colleague bravely took to the role of bingo caller and came prepared with a list of bingo call names. This elicited many laughs, quacks (number 22) and wolf whistles (number 11) from the room. The lucky winners went home with some luxury prizes from the hotel, including a bathrobe and slippers, and their teddy bear mascot.

When it was time to go home, Penfold members said ‘Arigato’, and left feeling both calm and rejuvenated from the Japanese tea, and also gleeful from the wonderful afternoon that they had.
