Connaught Village Green is now open. This vibrant new public space nestled at the end of Kendal Street introduces biodiverse planting, natural stone paving and ample outdoor seating, offering residents, visitors and local businesses a tranquil retreat amidst the bustling cityscape. Surrounded by the charming boutiques and cafés of Connaught Village, the Green serves as a focal point for community engagement.
Key enhancements include improved pedestrian crossings, widened footways and the introduction of biodiverse planting and outdoor seating. These improvements not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of the area but also promote social interaction.

Construction
Public realm improvements on Connaught Street, Albion Street and Kendal Street will begin from Wednesday 2 October 2024 and will take place Monday to Friday between 8am and 6pm, and if required, on Saturdays, between 8am and 1pm. Works will continue up to the Westminster Christmas shutdown of works on 28 November, then will resume in January to complete through to May 2025.
The scheme will be completed in four phases, as shown on the map below. Phases 1 to 3 are planned to be completed in 2024, including on Albion Street, Connaught Street’s southern side, and around the Duke of Kendal pub. In the new year work will commence on the northern Kendal Street footway, towards Titchborne Row. The paving design for this phase is being finalised.
It is possible that the works date may slip for operational reasons such as weather delays between now and the planned start date.

Pedestrian access and traffic lane closures
Pedestrian walking routes will always be maintained, but routes may be longer as fencing will be in place along the kerb edge. Pedestrian access to properties will always be maintained. In order to undertake the works safely, a traffic lane closure on the south side of Connaught Street will be put in place throughout phases 1, 2, 3 and 4, only allowing east-bound traffic. The diversion route for west-bound traffic is shown below.

Consultation and proposals
Westminster Council is carrying out further consultation on the traffic arrangements for the creation of Connaught Village Green. This follows previous consultation phases in March and September 2023.
These new proposals see the retention of two way traffic on Kendal Street, following comments made in previous consultation.

- Improved crossings with a raised table and shorter crossing distances to increase pedestrian comfort;
- Updating the north – south cycle link via Titchborne Row to encourage pedestrian and cycle travel, reduce emissions and improve air quality;
- Widening the footway at the southern side of Connaught Street (between the junction of Albion Street and Kendal Street) with a loading bay, two trees and cycle stands;
- Providing a place for residents to socialise with additional seating and access to free drinking water; and
- Providing additional cycle stands on Connaught Street.

Road and kerbside changes include:
- The relocation of a zebra crossing;
