Six employee volunteers from YuMe Toys, whose office is based in Capital House, provided Penfold Age Well Centre with a Memorial Garden makeover on 15 July 2026. As part of this activity, volunteers pruned branches and removed weeds in the Centre’s memorial garden – a reflective space where older people enjoy connecting with nature.

After clearing the invasive weeds, volunteers then added a fresh layer of compost and an even layer of bark chippings, which can help prevent the weeds re-emerging.

Penfold Age Well Centre, located in Church Street ward, hosts a weekly gardening club amongst some of its green-fingered members, however, the centre relies on volunteers to complete larger tasks to help the garden remain safe and welcoming.

Volunteers rolled up their sleeves to tackle hard-to-reach central weeds deep inside two large planter boxes, which older people with limited mobility find it difficult to tend to.

The team also gave a helping hand to the garden’s vegetable patch, using twine and bamboo to create supportive structures for the garden’s drooping tomato plants to continue to grow and flourish.

Finally, on an increasingly warm and sunny day, the volunteers watered the plants which, during this prolonged period of hot weather, is essential to stop the soil drying out.

Many thanks to the volunteer team at YuMe Toys for their enthusiasm, passion and dedication to transform the garden!

The activity was arranged as part of our Community Programme which supports Marble Arch BID members to engage in the community. From environmental projects to skill-sharing to coffee mornings, there is something to suit every community engagement plan that creates memorable moments and sustainable impact.
