Gardening and Social Projects Blossom with the Victory Services Club

Dedicated volunteers from the Victory Services Club, a military members’ club located on Seymour Street, took setbacks in their stride to deliver vital support for two older people’s hubs on 3 June 2025.

An eager team of nine gardening volunteers at Penfold Community Hub didn’t let the rain beat them and persisted through the showers to help transform the residential care home’s community garden and support their outreach projects as part of our Community Programme.

Volunteers rolled up their sleeves to help make the garden safe and welcoming for residents. On the list of tasks included removing decaying vegetation, weeding around the Hydrangeas and sowing new plants. Volunteers also helped remove a collapsing wooden frame from the area under the vines, lined planters with fabric and topped up others with compost.

After a water leak on Daventry House’s roof terrace scuppered plans to revitalise the outdoor garden, volunteers brought the greening project direct to residents by leading a tabletop planting session in its communal lounge. Volunteers brought a range of bedding plants and herbs, which they supported residents to pot and take to their rooms to brighten up their window sills. In amongst the planting, volunteers served up sweet treats and refreshments as well as joining in board games and conversations, all of which help reduce isolation and improve well-being amongst residents.

A big thank you to a wonderful group of volunteers, who quickly adapted to the change in plan and the weather, effectively undertaking much-needed garden tasks at the hub and a very engaging and enjoyable coffee, games and planting session with older residents at a local sheltered housing scheme.
