Hampden Gurney visit The Brunel Building for STEAM week

On Monday 9 March, 29 Year 5 students from Hampden Gurney Primary School were invited to visit the Brunel Building by property firm Derwent London. The visit was organised as part of Westminster Council’s STEAM week, raising aspirations around Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths.

This visit was designed to focus on the arts and its unique relationship with engineering. The session started with a tour of the outside of the building and a brief history of Isambard Kingdom Brunel – who designed Paddington Station. Students were able to examine the structures’ unusual design and learn why certain materials were used. The children were also lucky enough to meet one of the architects from Fletcher Priest – the firm who designed the  building. The students had the opportunity to participate in a discussion about the building’s unique art installations, including James Capper’s famous TREADPADS.

The visit came to delightful close, with pupils using what they had learnt to come up with their own Brunel inspired art pieces, that will be showcased in the reception area.

It was a pleasure to have Hampden Gurney at The Brunel Building during Westminster’s STEAM Week and to see the building’s design and artwork inspire their very own creations.
