Local volunteers help make gardening accessible for local older people

A volunteer-led tabletop planting and craft session by employees from Healthcare Central London and The Prince Akatoki London helped grow social connections and plants alike.

Seven volunteers from Healthcare Central London, a federation of GP surgeries across Westminster, and The Prince Akatoki, a five-star boutique hotel, came together to run the activity at supported living residence, Daventry House, on Tuesday 23 June 2026. On a baking hot day, participants assembled in the cool environment of the communal lounge, where volunteers helped 10 residents to paint their own designs on small ceramic pots. Residents’ designs took inspiration from flora and fauna, as well as bright checkerboard and polka dot patterns.

Volunteers then helped each resident to plant marigold seeds in their finished pots, creating a cheerful keepsake as the flowers bloom over the next six-to-eight weeks. Tabletop planting makes gardening accessible for older people with limited mobility and is a fun way for residents to socialise during a practical, sensory experience. Volunteers also took part in the activity, donating their own pot creations to residents who were unable to join on the day.

After creating the individual pots for residents to display in their rooms, volunteers then helped the group fill larger terracotta pots with a wide selection of herbs – including mint, basil and parsley. Residents recently started a weekly Coffee Morning Club, and its members are already planning to enjoy mint tea at their next get-together!

The activity was arranged as part of our Community Programme which supports Marble Arch BID members to engage in the community. From environmental projects to skill-sharing to coffee mornings, there is something to suit every community engagement plan that creates memorable moments and sustainable impact.
