It was anchors away for staff at London Marriott Hotel Park Lane, who took part in a canal clean-up on 22 October 2024.

Employee volunteers from London Marriott Hotel Park Lane helped take out the trash on the Grand Union Canal.
A crew of eight colleagues from across the hotel’s hospitality, finance and sales departments participated in the eco-friendly activity, sailing on an electric-powered boat through the Grand Union Canal.
The team used litter pickers and nets to collect rubbish and plastic pollution from the waterways, with community partner GoBoat Paddington, who got everything shipshape before setting sail.
Bringing with them a tidal wave of enthusiasm, the team made it look like plain sailing as they retrieved five large bags of rubbish from the canal.
Unfortunately, litter blights can cause serious damage to the waterways. According to the Canal and River Trust research, around 14 million pieces of plastic rubbish ends up in the canals and rivers each year. This causes the potential damage to waterside habitats and risk serious injuries or even suffocation of the wildlife.
As well as helping rid the water ways of pollution, the activity also provided a unique way to experience the local area through the meandering 13.5 miles that make up the Paddington arm of the waterway.
The activity was part of our Community Programme, which supports our BID members to engage in volunteering and address a diverse range of community needs. It helps provide solutions to our members’ CSR/ESG commitments by sourcing, brokering and facilitating meaningful local volunteering opportunities.
From team challenges to skill-sharing and mentoring, there is something to suit every community engagement plan that creates memorable moments and makes a positive sustainable impact.
