Marble Arch London BID has submitted two responses to Westminster City Council following the Council’s publication in November of Oxford Street Proposals and City Plan 2019-2040. These are two significant documents that will have a major impact on Edgware Road and Marble Arch, and we have responded to both documents to ensure that the needs of our area are met.
In relation to Oxford Street, for which our area includes Marble Arch and the far west of Oxford Street we said:
- We wanted to see more transformative proposals for Marble Arch to lessen the impact on traffic on this important gateway to our area;
- That Marble Arch should be promoted more as a cultural events space;
- That there needs to be better pedestrian crossing facilities across the roads in the area;
- That the pedestrian experience should be the same for people as they walked west along Oxford Street from Selfridges to Marble Arch rather than experience a decline in their experience due to narrower pavements;
- That changes to traffic flows should not impact on the Edgware Road.

In relation to the City Plan that sets out the Council’s planning policies for the whole of the city we said:
- We welcome the identification of Edgware Road as an area for commercial development and that the southern part of Edgware Road should form part of the West End Retail and Leisure Special Policy Area;
- We supported the policies to prevent the loss of office space in the area, and that roof extensions to office buildings should generally be permitted in the area;
- That there should be a policy to actively remove telephone boxes from the area;
- That businesses wanting tables and chairs outside the premises should all be treated in a fair and consistent manner;
- That extensions to hotels should be allowed, whether they be for residents or non-residents;
- We supported the removal of the Stress Area designation for the area.
