New Accessibility Guides

In celebration of Purple Tuesday, The Portman Estate has launched a new set of accessibility guides designed to make the Marylebone and Marble Arch areas more accessible for everyone. The initiative, developed in partnership with AccessAble, includes one new route guide and 15 detailed venue guides, covering local favourites such as The Prince Akatoki London, AngloThai and Townhouse.

Each guide is created by AccessAble’s team of trained surveyors, providing in-depth, factual information about accessibility features, from doorway widths, lighting levels and step heights to hearing assistance and accessible toilets. These details help visitors plan their journeys with confidence, recognising that accessibility needs vary widely from person to person.

Purple Tuesday is a global movement focused on improving the customer experience for disabled people and promoting accessibility across all sectors. With nearly one in five people in the UK living with a disability, initiatives like these play a vital role in creating inclusive, welcoming neighbourhoods and high streets.

The spending power of disabled people and their households, known as the Purple Pound, is estimated at £274 billion a year, yet businesses lose an estimated £2 billion a month by failing to meet their needs. Research also shows that three-quarters of disabled visitors have left a venue because of poor accessibility or customer service, underscoring how important initiatives like AccessAble and Purple Tuesday are for creating welcoming, inclusive destinations.

The new guides will support visitors, residents and local employees, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the area’s hotels, restaurants, cultural venues and cafés without barriers.
