Oxford Street Pedestrianisation: Monday 26 October 2026

Bus and traffic diversions will start from the evening of Sunday 25 October.

  • Orchard Street/North Audley Street
  • Duke Street
  • Stratford Place /Davies Street
  • Vere Street/New Bond Street
  • Holles Street / Harewood Place
  • Regent Street
  • Great Portland Street

Some roads may have short-term closures at times to allow construction works.

Mobility scooters and emergency vehicles will have access to the street at any time, cycling will not be permitted on the traffic-free section. Buses will be served by new bus stops on Wigmore Street, Henrietta Place and Cavendish Place.

Enabling works by TfL commenced at 10pm on 8 September to prepare Oxford Street to become traffic free between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street by late October 2026.

The works will be carried out in phases and will vary in scale and complexity. They will take place alongside other projects in the area and will result in temporary and permanent changes to local road layouts.  The first planned works include changes to road markings in the Binney Street and Weighhouse Street area.

Subject to the necessary consents and approvals, other works over the coming weeks will:

  • Focus on changes to traffic and access arrangements on surrounding streets, including new two-way traffic routes, a permanent closure of James Street to through traffic, and revisions to one-way systems to support local access and bus movements
  • Include changes to parking, taxi ranks and blue badge bays, new bus stands, junction improvements, traffic signal updates, and other kerbside alterations across the area.

Where possible, works will be undertaken overnight to reduce disruption, although some daytime working will be necessary. Works will be clearly signed, and local residents and businesses will be contacted directly where appropriate.  TfL recognise that these works may cause some temporary inconvenience and appreciate the impact this can have. While some disruption is unavoidable, it is expected to be short term and will be closely monitored.

Tube and rail services will not be affected. However, some bus routes will be temporarily diverted or altered as works progress. Taxis and private hire vehicles will continue to operate but some pick-up and drop-off locations may change.

TfL are committed to maintaining accessible routes throughout the programme and encourage customers to check before travelling. For the latest travel information, please visit Oxford Street area works – Transport for London and use TfL Go or Journey Planner.

As with all TfL works, any queries or complaints can be made via their website at tfl.gov.uk/help-and-contact or by calling 0343 222 1234.

Following public consultations in 2025 and 2026, the main construction works to bring about the Oxford Street pedestrianisation between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street are set to start in September. The ambition is for this stretch of Oxford Street to be traffic-free by mid to late October.

Subject to the necessary approvals, works will commence on 2 September 2026, focused on the Oxford Street, Regent Street, Bond Street and Great Portland Street areas. This will result in changes to some road layouts including temporary road closures, lane restrictions, diversions and changes to parking and loading arrangements. The majority of the work will be carried out overnight in order to keep disruption to a minimum.

Tube and rail services will not be affected by these works, but some bus routes will be temporarily diverted or altered. Taxis and private hire vehicles will continue to operate, although some pick-up and drop-off locations for taxi and private hire services may change.

Customers are being informed on the enabling works through bus stop ‘not in use’ signage, TfL’s travel advice webpages, emails to bus customers and road users and Sat Nav updates. You can also check here before you travel for details of Oxford Street works.

Prior to Oxford Street becoming traffic-free, TfL are inviting businesses to attend in person and online sessions to ensure businesses can continue to make and receive essential deliveries, servicing and waste collections in affected areas. You can book your place below.
