Hilton London Metropole volunteers tended to Mulberry trees, painted garden fences and swept fallen leaves as they went back to school for a volunteer activity on 29 July 2025.

Hallfield Primary School occupies a spacious site in North Paddington providing lots of outdoor areas for pupils; many living in flats on the nearby Hallfield Estate with little access to outdoor space at home. The grounds require constant upkeep so the support from the volunteer team was essential to keep the site safe and welcoming for pupils, staff and visitors.

Among the tasks carried out by the team of 10 enthusiastic volunteers were tending to two imposing trees in the school’s playground.

The team removed brickwork around the base of the trees to increase their roots’ access to water. Without the work being done, over time, the growing roots search for water can lead to cracks in the playground surface.

Volunteers removed slabs that can restrict the tree’s water intake.

Volunteers also helped sweep fallen leaves outside the school’s tennis courts, which will be in use across the summer for holiday activities, so removing the leaves helps keep the site safe and welcoming for visiting groups.

In addition, the Hilton team helped give tired walls and a garden fence a fresh lick of paint, brightening up the outdoor play area, as well as protecting the surfaces from the elements, extending their lifespan.
