On Thursday 8 May 2025, the UK will mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe Day), commemorating the end of the Second World War in Europe. To honour this historic moment, the Government has announced an extension to licensing hours for pubs, bars, cafés, restaurants and other licensed premises across England and Wales.
Licensed venues normally permitted to sell alcohol and provide late-night refreshments until 11pm will be allowed to stay open until 1am on Friday 9 May 2025, giving businesses the opportunity to welcome customers for longer and play a key role in the day’s celebrations.

The licensing extension comes as part of a wider week-long programme of commemorations across London, beginning on bank holiday Monday 5 May. The VE80 Procession and Flypast will launch the week’s events, with a ceremonial route from Parliament Square to Buckingham Palace, expected to draw large crowds and increased footfall across central London. Businesses may see higher visitor numbers throughout the week, particularly around major ceremonial sites, with public transport and security arrangements likely to be affected.
Other activities will be taking place across the week with more information on these and how to get involved available here.

Similar licensing extensions have been introduced in recent years for major national events, including the King’s Coronation and the UEFA Euro 2024 final. This year’s VE Day celebrations will culminate on Thursday 8 May with a day of events across London, including a live BBC One broadcast of a commemorative party at Horse Guards Parade, welcoming 10,000 attendees.
The extended licensing hours offer a fantastic opportunity for our local hospitality sector to boost trade and join the national celebration. We encourage businesses in Marble Arch to take full advantage of the relaxed rules and help make this historic anniversary a memorable one for visitors and locals alike.
